ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

The admission process FOR ACADEMIC PROGRAMS at the Swedish Open University

Here are the general steps you will need to follow to apply:

  1. The first step in the admission process is choosing the program or course you wish to pursue. The Swedish Open University offers a wide range of academic programs and courses in various fields, as well as professional courses and mentorship so take some time to explore your options and select the one that best fits your goals and interests

  2. Once you have selected your program, course, or mentorship program, check the requirements to ensure you meet the necessary qualifications. Requirements may vary depending on the program, but you must have completed upper secondary school (gymnasium) or equivalent qualifications for undergraduate programs and professional courses and have a good command of the English language if your program is taught in English.

  3. To apply for admission, you must complete and submit an online application form through the university's website. Make sure you have all your available documents for uploading. You must provide personal information, academic records, and other supporting documents, such as transcripts, language proficiency test results, and a personal statement where you introduce yourself to us. You must submit a copy of your passport (EU/EEA/Swiss citizens may submit a copy of a valid identity card that clearly states citizenship). Always submit documents in the official language of the country where you studied, along with an official translation in English. Documents directly issued in English are accepted. Note: We also accept official transcripts and diplomas issued in French, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, and Finnish without requiring a translation.

    Documents to upload:

    • High School Diploma/Certificate (which entitles the student to university studies in his/her home country), or a bachelor’s degree.
    • Transcripts of completed courses and grades (if issued separately from the Diploma/Certificate)
    • Proof of English proficiency
    • A copy of your passport (EU/EEA/Swiss citizens may submit a copy of a valid identity card which clearly states citizenship).
    • Letter of Motivation: The letter of motivation is where you introduce yourself to us.

  4. There is an application fee for all programs and courses, which must be paid at the time of application. The fee varies depending on the program and the number of courses you are applying for. Note that Sweden requires an application fee of SEK 900 for academic programs (about 100 USD) for citizens outside the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA), and Switzerland to process and review an application. For other courses, you find different requirements.

  5. Once you have submitted your application, it will be reviewed by the admissions committee. You will receive an admission decision within a few weeks, either an offer of admission, a waitlist status, or a denial. If you are offered admission, you will need to accept the offer and pay a registration fee to secure your spot. Fee structures and specifications are given in the application process and registration.

  6. After you have been admitted and have paid the applicable tuition fees to register, you will be able to enroll in courses for the upcoming semester. You will need to select the courses you wish to take, pay any applicable tuition fees, and ensure you have the necessary course materials and resources. A few days after you receive the acceptance letter, you can see the invoice for the first installment, which is equal to one semester's worth of tuition. Please be aware that the bill needs to be paid within three to five weeks. We must receive your proof of payment by the deadline noted on the invoice.
